15 Romeo

Wednesday passed uneventfully. Roman had been glad to see Rose and J doing alright. It had been unnerving to miss them at school on Tuesday, and then to be called out of class to talk with a police officer. He gave his side of the story and a little history of the relationship he had had with Tyler and Rose. Mercutio was called in for questioning as well, but wasn’t much help for what had taken place at the party. The video of the parking lot caught a group of kids messing with his Jeep, but no one could be made out clearly. The timestamp did make it out to be right after Charles had confronted Tyler and run him off. Circumstantial at best, but still better than nothing. Rose wouldn’t have to go back home, even if nothing happened to Tyler or their parents.

Drama time came around and Mr. Henderson passed out the cast list. The class was abuzz with excitement and it was more of a free day to discuss who was playing who, who were understudies, and delegating jobs of how to get all of the sets and costumes designed. In their immediate group Sloane and J were stagehands. Roman and Rose were the leads, but Bethany was the watchman that was to guard Nasrin-Nush. Sloane was understudy for the role of the princess’ father King Mikhail. Class flew by and all of the confusion and apprehension from Monday was replaced with enthusiasm and vigor.

Roman took the time to finish highlighting his lines in his script during basketball practice. His teammates were pretty supportive, but made it clear it better not distract him from helping them win. They might make it to state this year if everything worked out. College scouts had been making the rounds at games and everyone on the team was hyped up.

Brendan and Candice had shown Roman and Rose how to play an ancient game called Mills or Nine Men’s Morris. Part of the play had a competition of the game between Prince Bjorn and Princess Nasrin-Nush. Roman enjoyed the game so much he made his own board out of card stock and got some chips to play whenever he had free time. His parents and friends were over his obsession and it was a good distraction between everything that kept him busy. He actually wound up researching the game, which led to learning more about game theory, and how such an old and simple game can be so complex. He downloaded an app on his phone and found a website online to play the game with even more people. It was no surprise that the entire school watched such a popular guy tune out everything except a simple game that it spread like wildfire. A school club even started up to play weekly after school, but sadly Roman was too busy to attend.

Once he got home Roman reread the historical preface and got to work comparing King Bahram Gur to Prince Calaf in Turandot and Prince Calaf in Prince Calaf and the Princess of China.
